How to Interpret the Amsler Grid Test
The Amsler Grid is a simple tool that can help you notice changes in your central vision (macula). Regular checks may help you detect new distortions earlier.
Quick checklist: how to do it correctly
- Wear your usual glasses/contacts if you normally use them.
- Cover one eye and look at the center dot with the other eye.
- Don’t scan each line—keep focusing on the center and notice the overall pattern.
- Repeat under the same lighting and distance each time.
What a “normal” result looks like
Lines look straight, squares look even, and there is no obvious dark/blank area near the center.
Findings that may be abnormal
- Wavy/distorted lines: straight lines appear bent or warped.
- Broken/missing lines: lines look discontinuous or shifted.
- Blur: reduced clarity in the center or a specific area.
- Dark/blank spot: a gray/black area or “missing” region near the center.
When to see a doctor
If you notice a new or rapidly worsening distortion or a new dark spot—especially sudden changes— seek an eye doctor’s evaluation as soon as possible.
Common mistakes
- Testing with both eyes open (test one eye at a time).
- Not keeping your focus on the center dot.
- Not using your usual correction (glasses/contacts).
- Comparing results under different lighting/distance conditions.
